Tom’s Story
Tom believes that strong communities are built by neighbours who care, listen, and work together to make life better for everyone.
Born in Winnipeg and raised on the Canadian prairies, Tom learned the values of hard work, honesty, and community service at an early age. He earned his degree from the University of Alberta and went on to enjoy a rewarding 30-year career as an educator, helping young people reach their full potential. Throughout his life, Tom has also been deeply involved in community sports as a builder, administrator, and coach, helping young athletes develop confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills both on and off the field.
Tom and his wife, Shirley, have been married for 43 years. Together, they raised two children—Brendan, now a family doctor, and Stephanie, an educator. Today, they are proud grandparents to five wonderful grandchildren.
Nine years ago, Tom and Shirley chose West Kelowna as the place to enjoy their retirement. Drawn by the area's natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and welcoming community, they quickly embraced the West Kelowna lifestyle. Whether hiking local trails, swimming, golfing, or attending community events, they appreciate the many opportunities that make West Kelowna such a special place to call home.
Tom has spent the past six years serving as President of the Shannon Lake Neighbourhood Association, where he has worked tirelessly to advocate for residents, bring neighbours together, and help strengthen community connections. His leadership has focused on listening to residents, finding practical solutions, and ensuring local voices are heard.
In 2024, Tom chaired the Okanagan Wildfire Responders Gratitude Event, a community-wide celebration recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of the firefighters, emergency personnel, and volunteers who protected our region during the devastating 2023 wildfires.
Throughout his years of community service, Tom has earned a reputation as a thoughtful, approachable leader who believes that local government works best when it is transparent, accountable, and responsive to residents.
Tom is a strong advocate for affordable housing, better roads and transportation infrastructure, accessible health care, and a safer, more vibrant community. He believes West Kelowna can continue to grow while preserving the qualities that make it such a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Tom is committed to being a strong voice for West Kelowna—one that listens, collaborates, and puts the needs of residents first.
